Philosophy Of Education
“The more you read, the more you know.
The more you know, the smarter you grow.
The smarter you grow, the stronger your voice,
When speaking your mind, or making your choice.”
- Author unknown, poem displayed in many libraries
The purpose of education
Education lays the foundation for a person to fulfill their dreams and aspirations. The education process is meant to equip a person academically, mentally, physically, socially, scientifically, and spiritually. Education serves society by training individuals to become productive citizens. Education evolves as the needs of society evolve.
The role of the student in education
There is an old proverb: You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. Likewise, a teacher can teach a student, but can’t make them learn. The student has the responsibility of equipping themselves with the skills they will need to be successful in life. The student should master the material taught to them, participate in the learning process, question and analyze what has been taught to them, and formulate new goals to reached and mastered.
The role of the teacher in education
The teacher is a mentor guiding students in the learning process. The teacher facilitates learning, maintains order in the classroom, clearly teaches learning objectives, coaches students, tutors students, and inspires students during the learning process. The teacher is responsible for training themselves in the best teaching methods to meet the needs of their students. The teacher creates the learning the environment and presents the curriculum in a hands- on manner. The teacher urges full participation in all students. The teacher helps designs learning goals for each student.
The role of the parents in education
Parents are the most important teachers in a child’s life. The parent teaches the child life skills, morals, culture, and work ethic. The parents help a child take academic skills learned and school and apply those skills to all areas of the child’s life in meaningful ways. Parents are crucial in teaching children good morals and strong character. In Uganda, Africa i saw a displaced proverb: The most dangerous one can meet is not the python, lion, or leapord, but an educated man without character.
The role of the teacher in the community
The teacher works with the community to establish learning standards, find resources for students to grow, and helps to train students to become productive members of the community. The community in returns helps to provide the classroom with tools and technology to better help the teacher to train the students for the future workforce.
Program Goal # 3
Graduates of this program should be able to assume responsibility for the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of curricula or programs of study in particular disciplines and/or for particular populations.
Reflection
I believe every teacher (and school) should have a philosophy identified to describe how they teach and what they see their purpose as. Some teachers seek to expand students’ lives by enriching the classroom with art, music, nature, or field trips. Some teachers teach using cooperative learning and small groups, others seek to establish student work independence by having them work as individuals. No single teaching style is best... each style emphasis different learning requirements. In the future I should seek away to communicate my teaching philosophy to my students and their families.
